Do I have a case against my landlord
l am currently renting an apartment in Ohio and l have been having some
problems with my landlord. In my lease aside from my apartment l have also
rented a spot in the garage to park my car. The garage has a door but it
does not work and l was not notified beforehand.Anyone can walk off the
street directly into the garage with no problem. My car has been broken
into (via the windows) three times in the past five months. There is a hole
under my sink in the kitchen that has not been repaired. They never put working smoke alarms in the apartment. The doors to the building do not always lock and there are cockroaches.l have sent a certified letter to the landlord listing these problems and never got a response. Am l able to end my lease or request a month to month til l find another place? Can l sue my landlord for damage to my vehicle?. What can l do?
You have to use ur own insurance for ur issues with ur car.
Most of what you state was that way when you moved in, you can not force
the landlord to change it after the fact. You liked it well enough when
you agreed to the rental amount.
However, ur door needs to lock, but not the doors to the building. If you can not lock ur apartment you can call the housing authority. They will not care about the building doors or the door to the garage though. A working smoke detector (not a smoke alarm) is required. If it stopped working because it needs a new battery then it is ur issue, not the landlords. If you change the battery & it does not work you can call either the fire department or environmental health. They will likely give you a working one, you can buy them retail for under $7. All of the issues make it sound like you have decided to live in the ghetto area. No one will interfere with ur right to choose that standard of living.
Sounds like my slumlord, in toledo ohio. You can go downtown
put your rent in escro he wont get any of it to he makes the repairs , And
if he dont make the repairs before your lease is up you get al the money in
escro. When you put the money in escro ask him if u can get out the lease
he might let you rather then spend money on repairs
